The Gathering of the Vibes festival was originally called "Deadhead Heaven - A Gathering of the Tribe" and was a tribute to the late Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead. The festival began as a memorial party in 1996, following the year of Jerry's death.

The party was thrown by Terrapin Tapes, a media distribution outlet for live concert recordings. The gathering provided an avenue for Grateful Dead fans to reunite every year for a weekend full of music and other activities. The festival-goers who make the trip each year to Gathering of the Vibes are also known as the Vibe Tribe.
In 2000, Bob Weir played at the festival along with bass player Les Claypool. This was the first time a former Grateful Dead player had step foot on the stage at the Gathering of the Vibes.
The festival has changed locations several times in the many years it has been around. In 2007, Gathering of the Vibes returned to Seaside Park, Connecticut and will also be hosted there in 2008. The festival has not been at Seaside Park since the 1999 & 2000 shows.
