Photo of the Week - No. 18

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

I have to admit that I haven't spent as much time working on Festival Friendly in the past week and half as I would like to be. My motivation has been lacking and I am considering a few options for a new direction for Festival Friendly also (More on that later!).

Please bare with me as the festival season slows down and I take a few moments to relax - recollect my thoughts - and at the same come up with a clear plan for the site to finish out 2008 on top of my game.

One of my favorite features of Festival Friendly is the Photo of the Week selections that I get to make however. That is one of my favorite parts about the community - there are so many festival-fans who also have a passion for photography.

This weeks selection comes from jahvtzavital via our flickr group.

potw_no18_thumb.jpgI am slightly biased in my selection since the mother in this photo has awesome dreadlocks. I really like this photograph though because it depicts a mother and child at a festival. It depicts the great connection and attachment a child has to its mother, but at the same time shows just how diverse of a crowd you might find at festivals. Parents, children, grand-parents, etc!

Please check out this photo and be sure to check back for an interview with jahvtzavital about photography and festivals and this photo in particular!

Gates for Melon Kamp open in just twenty minutes. Festival Friendly will be in hiatus at the festival all weekend. Come join us!

Melon Kamp
starts tomorrow in Noblesville, Indiana and Festival Friendly (myself) will be present taking photos and hopefully trying my hand at writing actual set reviews.

I previously failed to mention the different themes that Melon Kamp is setting up for the three different days of the festival. I am not 100% sure of the details, but below are the themes for each day:

Friday

Glitter, Glow, and Sparkle

Saturday

Super Heroes and Fairies

Sunday

Melon Mania

This will be the first time we have ever recieved a second round of interview questions for our Photo of the Week feature. One thing I did learn from ignite the sky is that her favorite music festival is actually the Warped Tour - which is exactly where her photo that we selected was taken.

Please check out the photo below along with ignite the sky's flickr photostream by clicking on her user name.

I also wanted to share ignite the sky's personal website and portfolio in case you might be interested!

Ignite The Sky

The second round of interview questions have been posted below!

potw_no15_thumb.jpg

What actually made you want to pick up a camera? Was it only because you had grown up around cameras because of your father?

When we used to go on vacations, I wanted to capture all the landscapes and animals we'd see. Unlike drawing, photography allowed me to capture those subjects instantly and in great detail. These could then be used later for drawing references, which I guess is one of the main reasons I got into photography. My dad only had one camera, which was used mainly for snapshots and pictures of family. Since I liked taking photos, my parents just left me with it and I kind of went from there.

Why that particular medium?

I actually do a lot of different forms of art besides photography including drawing, painting and design. (I've also been known to do jewelry, metal and ceramics.) I feel that every experience in life makes you stronger. So in art, for example, something I've learned while drawing may help when applied to photography. Composition is a great example. Plus, I love too many of those different artistic processes to just pick one.

Do you normally stick to music-related photography only? Do you have any other subjects you enjoy?

I take photos of essentially everything. Most of these are snap shots, reference shots (for drawing) or of personal interest. I kind of feel like the reason I share mostly music-related shots is due to the fact that they get a larger response than anything else I shoot. I also enjoy music related photography the most, so maybe that comes across in the shots.

In which situations do you find your 50mm f/1.8 AF Nikkor lens works best for?

I bought this lens specifically for concert photography. So essentially I use it at any show that has a photo pit, since most medium to larger venues won't allow flash work. Smaller club shows are more touch and go, depending on the amount of light available. The last show I shot was this little lodge basement style show and I wouldn't have gotten off any shots if it wasn't for this lens. (In the situation I was in, using a flash during the acoustic set would have been too aggressive for me.) I've also used it when I want an extreme push to my depth of field.

Can you list some of your favorite music festivals or events that you have experienced so far?

My favorite festival is probably Warped Tour. I've just been going so long that it's hard to imagine not going, even if I am not stoked on the line up. It is tradition. The first Bamboozle Left ruled, wasn't as stoked on 08's version. I've never been to Bamboozle East, but I'd go if given the chance. I think the only other festival of note is Coachella. It's hot and gross, but there are a variety of bands, interesting people and artwork.

As far as gear - do you ever carry a point and shoot camera or use one?

I have a Canon Powershot a610 and I love it. I carry it around everywhere. Its extremely useful to bring to shows that don't allow professional cameras because they normally don't care about P&Ss. Your equipment can be limiting, but I'm a firm believer that people can still do great work with even basic tools if they know what they are doing. I've met a lot of people with dSLRs who think the camera is just going to do the work for them. They don't understand what f/stops and shutter speeds are and how they affect exposure. I just don't think P&Ss should get the bad rap that they tend to and I think that if you are going to spend a lot of money on a nicer camera, you should probably know what some of the buttons do.

Do you feel naked or vulnerable without a camera in hand?

I used to get so upset being at a show without a camera. I would see all these amazing poses or great lighting and just be distraught that I had missed the opportunity to catch it. After awhile though, and a lot of effort, I learned to let it go. I try to carry a camera everywhere with me, specially shows, even if it's just my P&S, but I don't feel naked or vulnerable without one. Sure it sucks to miss a great shot, but at least I was there to actually experience it in the first place. I don't want to live life constantly behind a camera lens. That being said, I missed a shot of JD from the band Valencia breaking his guitar at Bamboozle Left '08... I'm STILL pissed off at myself for not catching it and that was back in the beginning of April.

In Memory of LeRoi Moore

| | Comments (4) | TrackBacks (0)

leroi1.jpgI woke up this morning to the news that LeRoi Moore passed away last night from complications associated with a previous ATV accident. LeRoi Moore was born in 1961 in Dunn, North Carolina.

Interestingly enough his real name was Gary Lee Moore. LeRoi was a founding member of the Dave Mathew's Band and had helped to write several songs - the most well known being "Stay" and "Too Much".

I am not going to provide information about the accident or cause of death as I think it is irrelevant to me. This great musician will be missed; especially in the music festival world.

Please find below, a message to fans from the official Dave Mathew's Band website:

"We are deeply saddened that LeRoi Moore, saxophonist and founding member of Dave Matthews Band, died unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon, August 19, 2008, at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center in Los Angeles from sudden complications stemming from his June ATV accident on his farm near Charlottesville, Virginia. LeRoi had recently returned to his Los Angeles home to begin an intensive physical rehabilitation program."

livemusicblog.jpgThe guys over at Live Music Blog have posted up a great article about Lollapalooza 2008. They originally posted a general synopses of the festival, but have gone back to really put their thoughts and opinions online.

I realize there are probably reviews all over the web for Lollapalooza, but I really apperciate what the guys over at Live Music Blog are doing. If you are interested in reading the article, or checking out some of the videos that are included - click the following link!

jambase_dotcom_logo.gifJambase.com has posted a review from the Madison Roots Festival that took place on August 2nd in Madison, Wisconsin.

This review was written by James Parker. There is no mention of a particular photographer so I assume James took the photos as well.

Madison Roots Festival did something I have never seen before at a festival. One of the stages was actually powered by festival-goers who were bicycling to create energy in order to power all of the equipment on stage. That is a really great feature in my opinion - especially how society in general is beginning to change their habits in energy consumption.

Another week has passed us - the days are flying by and tend to blend together it seems. It's nice to stop and take a moment to check out a great photograph - a captured moment in time.

This weeks selection was actually taken at the recent All Points West Festival that took place at Liberty State Park  in New Jersey. The photographer is baonguyen and this shot was taken while they were on assignment for Brooklyn Vegan - very cool!

The quality in the selection this week is amazing. This is a perfect shot of Thom Yorke from Radiohead performing on August 8th at the festival.

potw_no17_thumb.jpgI hope to get a short interview back from baonguyen very soon!

I want to remind everyone of our last Photo of the Week selection that we made. We got a really great response from ignite the sky and actually will have a follow-up interview that will be posted very soon. Check out the original entry here!

ff_banner.jpgFestival Friendly - Forum
Our forums were just put online last week and we are really excited to have these online now. Please register and join in on a discussion. We have already been fortunate to have a handful of really active and enthusiastic members. So exciting folks!

Festival Friendly - Myspace
We do in fact have our very own Myspace Profile. We have been fortunate enough to get a really great response from festival fans on Myspace. We seem to be getting new Friend Requests on a regular basis. Please keep adding us!

In time we will be adding some various tools and functionality to our Myspace Profile that will help as another resource for information on Festivals.

Festival Friendly - Facebook
We currently have a Facebook Group. I am not sure if this is available to everyone - as I noticed this is an actual Network on Facebook. Let us know if you have problems joining! We have had several photos added to our gallery there.

Festival Friendly - Flickr
This was our first group we created to help establish our presence online. As of today, our Flickr group has grown to 61 Members and our Photo gallery has a staggering 658 photos already. That's not bad for only creating the group about two months ago.

We are aware of several other avenues and websites that we can create accounts to help promote the site. In time, we hope that we don't have to rely on these sites to help get visitors. For now though - please check them out and add us as a friend on Myspace, or contribute to our Flickr group.

Most importantly though - sign up in for our forum and start contributing. We are growing already!

ignite the sky was really enthusiastic about this selection which was really fun for me. Check out the interview below - we got some really great responses this week.

The photo was taken at Warped Tour - read below for the interview.

What were you trying to capture in this shot (If anything at all)?

I feel that one of the main reasons shows exist is to allow an interaction of energy and passion between the artist and fan. So I was mainly trying to capture that connection, the energy between the two.

How long have you been behind a camera?

I started messing with my dad's old Minolta probably 8 or so years ago.

Do you prefer a certain brand of gear?

I actually own three different brands of camera, I love them all. The only preference I can really state is how instinctual my Nikon dSLR's buttons/functions are for me versus its Canon counterpart. I suppose it would just take getting used to, but I found that my Nikon, even when it was new, feels just like an extension of myself.

What is your favorite piece of gear that you own?

I enjoy my 50mm f/1.8 AF Nikkor lens. Not expensive, but does really well. I never use that for festival shooting though.

Do you find it troubling to carry equipment around at festivals and still have a decent amount of mobility?

Two instances stand out for me when it's difficult to move with equipment. One, when you are shooting a large artist and the pit is completely filled with photographers. Not only are you trying to keep your equipment from being knocked around, but you also have to make sure you are not stepping into someone else's viewfinder, while at the same time still try to work. And two, when you are shooting a tiny stage with a "fake" fence-like barricade. I shot a set once where the pit was literally a foot or so wide, (just enough room for me basically) and I was scared the fence might fall over.

With that said, what do you normally carry with you at a festival?

Two or three cameras, my favorite being my simple but dependable Nikon d50. The lenses I normally take have focal lengths of 50mm, 18-55mm and 55-200mm. The extras, like film, batteries, etc. Lens cleaner is a serious thing to remember, it's saved me more than once. Lots of water. Sunscreen. I guess the last thing would be positive energy. Bands and artists in my experience honestly like to see working photographers enjoying the set.

08_Lolla_pos_Logo_rgb.jpgI recently discovered an article posted on Metromix Chicago pertaining to the recent Lollapalooza Music Festival.

This site has a huge section re-capping Lollapalooza 2008 including reviews, photos, comments and stories from this years festival.

Metromix Chicago - Lollapalooza 2008

The best section of this guide however is the Strange Poses article that I found. The Strange Poses section is a set of 33 different photos capturing both fans and artists making some very strange faces or gestures during the festival.

The best part is that each photo is accompanied with a caption describing the photo. Go waste some of your time today and check out these photos at the following link!

This selection for Photo of the Week is from one of the stops on Warped Tour 08'. The photo was contributed to our flickr group by ignite the sky.

I really enjoyed this photograph because it shows the perfect connection between the artist on stage and the fans in the crowd - at least that is what it makes me think of.

Go Ask Keller

| | Comments (1) | TrackBacks (0)

DearKeller.jpgKeller Williams - the great singer / song writer - who travels the country constantly on tour playing great shows for fans everywhere is giving back to the community in a very cool way.

Keller Williams has decided to do something really cool via his Myspace Page.

Keller is allowing anyone to send him questions via Myspace that he will then answer and post on the page for everyone to read and check out.

Just send Keller a message with the subject line: "Dear Keller" and then whatever questions you want to ask.

This is a really great way for an artist to connect with his fans, but also to give some insight on the man that we always see up on stage.

Keller Williams is a badass and I think this is just another example of why he has so many fans.

All_Good_festival_circle.gifThe All Good Music Festival which has recently come and gone for this season is asking everyone who attended to fill out a quick and easy survey they have posted online.

The survey should not take very long and really will benefit the organizers of the festival to gather clear feedback so they will have a better idea of what to offer festival-goers next year and the year after that.

Also, if you do respond and fill out this survey you will be entered in for a chance to win many All Good merchandise packages. What are in these packages? We have no clue - I couldn't find any information like that.
