I apologize for it being Friday and our continued entry for the Photo of the Week is just now being posted. This is completely my fault - there was a communication break down of sorts. Regardless, its Friday and we have a short interview for everyone to read.
This Photo of the Week selection was one of the best so far in my opinion. Not because of image quality or because of the colors or anything like that. The simple quote, "We came to get down." really made me love this photo. On top of that - I'm a big fan of mountain biking and love to ride my bike. I've never taken my bike to a festival though!
Without holding you up anymore, check out this interview of sommerspeople. Thanks again buddy!
What were you trying to capture in this shot (If anything at all)?
I was trying to capture the overall vibe of the camping area scene. Everywhere you look you are bound to find something amusing (you just gotta poke around, ya know~). I was drawn to the "We came to get down" inscription on the back of the bus, which looks like it was written in chalk.. Pretty cool concept.. a new message for every trip!
How long have you been behind a camera?
I bought myself an SLR camera when I graduated college in 1994, but I didn't really get into photography until around 2000, when I bought a Nikon D100 digital SLR.
Do you prefer a certain brand of gear?
I've since upgraded to the Nikon D200 and I own all Nikkor lenses, so I guess you could say I prefer Nikon.. but I also have owned quite a few Canon point and shoot digital cameras (from their "Digital Elf" line) and I really like them. You get pretty good pictures and the "pocketability" of the camera means that you have it with you more often. It also records video at 30 frames per second, which comes in handy at concerts.
What is your favorite piece of gear that you own?
As far as camera's, it's the D200... but my iPhone is a close second.
Do you find it troubling to carry equipment around at festivals and still have a decent amount of mobility?
Yes! I stopped lugging my D200 + 80-200 f/2.8 AFS lens when my buddy slipped in the mud at the All Good Festival a few years ago while carrying his brand new Canon DSLR and very expensive zoom lens. I was kind of messed up at the time so I thought it was funny but the next morning the reality set in and from then on I leave the D200 locked in my car once the lights go down at festivals. I also find that the crappier my camera gear looks, the more people are willing to let me photograph them...
With that said, what do you normally carry with you at a festival?
I bring my D200 and a couple of high speed lenses... I used to bring a lot more gear but after photographing festivals for seven years I've pretty much narrowed it down to the Nikkor 80-200 f/2.8 AFS (works great for close-ups during the shows) and the Nikkor 20mm f/2.8 (ideal for walking around the festival grounds and capturing the scene). I also bring the Canon SD1000 for snap shots and capturing video.
